Thanks for checking out Ten Million Miles. I love songs – always have. The form is potent – and it’s a challenge to write a great one. If one is lucky enough to write a truly solid song it will survive any production style. Songs can wiggle into your heart and mind like no other thing. This album has been made with a set of rules. Everything on it has to make me smile even if it’s not a “happy” song. All those involved must be people I love. The instruments used must connect to my life somehow. And then, of course, there must be enough room for the listener to “fill in” and enjoy. Those rules brought an eclectic result. Simple songs – moody and stark – find themselves next to Modular Synthesis or an Eagles-like melody or a Motown groove. When love and joy run the show - almost anything can happen.

I play several instruments and have all the tech options for music-making but I prefer working with people and microphones. I don’t sing but my family prevailed upon me with respect to A Mother’s Love, and, where they didn’t convince fully, Abraham Laboriel, Sr. insisted - so that song is a duet with Christopher Cross taking the third verse. Almost all the rest of the songs are sung by insanely talented people that have miraculously crossed my threshold at Scott Frankfurt Studio and have become friends. Ten Million Miles showcases Hannah Rose Lewis on three songs, Shelly Clark, Kathy Merrick & Wendy Smith Brune of Honey Cone, Verdine White, John Paris, Ellis Hall, Woody Mankowski, Megan Arial, Myla Renne, Jade Hendrix, DEVMO, Abe Laboriel, Jr., Scott Mayo, Javier Gonzales, Khristian Foreman, Charlie Tyler, Grant Fonda, Luanne Homzy, Ben Powell, Andrew Synowiec, Jeff Babko, Sean Hurley, Victor Indrizzo among many others (and even wifey Sharon Frankfurt appears) – and I can hardly believe it!

My past and current team members at SFS have been invaluable in making these the recordings happen and without Sharon, Valerie Hernandez, Katt Padden, Matheus Maciel and many other alums it would not have been possible. And there’s a real force of nature that is Grant Fonda who has helped compose, arrange and even help present the project – and Jack Majdecki – without whom I may not have started up the writing machine at all.
